Trebas Ontario Meets Toronto’s Mayor

What they talked about at Canadian Music Week.

July 03, 2024

From June 1 to 8, Trebas Toronto hosted a booth at Canadian Music Week (CMW), an annual industry conference and festival for artists and industry professionals. During the event, students and faculty were honoured to receive a surprise visit from Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow.

Jeff Wright, Program and Industry Coordinator, spoke to the mayor about the steps Trebas has taken to support aspiring female artists and engineers in audio, a traditionally male-dominated field.

This includes hosting guest speaker events with female industry leaders and promoting the music production and engineering of female students.

The mayor was happy to hear about the college’s initiatives in this area. She also noted that she has been a long-time supporter of the arts, and recently started learning guitar. The Trebas team offered her some words of encouragement and gave her a Trebas guitar pick for practice.

Attending events like CMW allows students to engage with the broader industry community, providing networking opportunities and the chance to stay ahead of trends. For example, at CMW 2024, students attended panel discussions, one of which consisted of a Q&A session with famed producer and artist Deadmau5.
